Kia Niro Discontinued in Australia: What to Buy Instead
Kia has ended sales of the Niro hybrid and Niro EV in Australia, even as a new-generation Niro appeared overseas. If you were planning to buy one, already own one, or are eyeing a used Niro, here is what it means and what to consider instead.
Based on published reports in early 2026. Confirm details with Kia Australia.
The short version
- The Niro (hybrid and EV) has been discontinued in Australia.
- A newer-generation Niro was ruled out for our market.
- Existing owners should keep their warranty and servicing access, but confirm the details with a Kia dealer.
- Kia’s closest replacements depend on what you wanted: the Seltos hybrid, EV3, or Sportage hybrid.
What happened
Reports in early 2026 said the compact Niro, sold as a hybrid and as an electric SUV, had been discontinued in Australia. The Niro EV had a high starting price of $66,590 before on-road costs, which left it undercut by rivals such as the Volvo EX30 (from $59,990 at the time) and by Kia’s own newer EV3, whose launch price began at $47,600. In short, a model that had been priced above newer and cheaper electric options struggled to justify its place.
If you already own a Niro
The warranty on vehicles already sold should continue under Kia’s terms, and the cars remain serviceable through Kia’s dealers. A model leaving the new-car range doesn’t normally end warranty or parts support, but policies can change, so:
- Ask your dealer to confirm parts availability and service arrangements for your model.
- Keep your service records up to date. See our warranty and servicing guide.
- Check the battery terms for your Niro in the warranty booklet, since hybrid and EV components have specific limits.
If you are considering a used Niro
A discontinued model can be good value, but do your homework:
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic, including a check of the hybrid or EV system.
- Ask for the full service history and confirm that services were done on schedule.
- Check for finance owing and write-off history with a PPSR search (ppsr.gov.au).
- Check for recalls on the Australian Government’s recalls website.
- Confirm the warranty status and whether it transfers to you.
- For the EV: ask for evidence of battery health and the charging cable that came with the car.
Resale values for discontinued models can move either way, so avoid assuming the price will hold.
What Kia offers instead
| If you wanted… | Consider | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A compact hybrid SUV | Seltos hybrid | Hybrid-only from late 2026; from $37,990 before on-road costs |
| A small electric SUV | EV3 | From $47,600 at launch; up to 604 km WLTP range |
| A bigger family hybrid | Sportage hybrid | Front- or all-wheel drive; Kia claims 4.9 or 5.3 L/100 km |
| A mid-size EV sedan | EV4 | From $49,990; up to 612 km WLTP |
How the price gap looks
At launch prices, the Niro EV’s $66,590 starting price was roughly $19,000 above the EV3’s $47,600 entry price. Even allowing for differences in size and equipment, that is a large gap, and it explains why many electric buyers looked elsewhere. Check current prices, as both have moved since.
Non-Kia alternatives
Reported rivals in the compact hybrid space include the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, Hyundai Kona Hybrid, MG ZS Hybrid and Honda HR-V e:HEV. In the electric space, the Volvo EX30 and BYD Atto 3 were mentioned as competitors. Compare drive-away price, warranty terms, service coverage near you and delivery time.
How to choose your replacement
- Decide hybrid or electric. If you can charge at home, an EV3 may suit you. If not, a hybrid is easier.
- Set a drive-away budget. See how to buy a new Kia.
- Think about size. A Seltos is a compact SUV; a Sportage is a size up.
- Test drive at least two options back to back.
Questions to ask a Kia dealer
- Will my Niro’s warranty and servicing continue unchanged?
- Which current Kia is the closest replacement for my needs?
- What is my Niro worth as a trade-in?
- What are the delivery times on the replacement?
